Its hardly been a month since taking the wraps off the regular CL-Class models, Mercedes-Benz went ahead and revealed the flagship versions of its Uber luxury coupe, the 2011 CL63 and CL65 AMG models. CL63 AMG, out goes the old naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 and in comes the smaller, lighter yet more powerful 5.5-liter V8 with twin-turbocharging and direct-injection technology, hooked up to an AMG Speed shift 7-speed automatic.

In standard form, it craks out 536HP at 5,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm propelling the CL63 AMG from zero to 60mph (96km/h) in 4.4 seconds, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250km/h).

Add the optional AMG Performance package, and output climbs to 563HP and 664 lb-ft of torque allowing the coupe to reach the 60mph (96km/h) mark in 4.3 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 186 mph (299km/h).

BMW lifted the veil this week on its planned battery-powered car, in an indication that it is serious about building a new class of vehicle and delivering substantial numbers to showrooms by 2013.

BMW, the German carmaker, created Project i in late 2007 with the goal of building a car for urban areas where more than half the world’s people live. But, as with many corporate green projects, it was sometimes hard to tell whether the effort was sincere or just a way to generate sustainability credentials.
