Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics: Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Celebration

The Canadian Women’s Hockey Team shut out the USA Hockey Team in 2-0 last Thursday, and earned third straight gold medal. They must be happy with their victory and achievements. In fact, they had the ‘Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Celebration‘ that is being investigated right now by the International Olympic Committee.

Should they be reprimanded for the issue? Well, it was said that after the game, the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Celebration occurred on the ice. They staged a raucous celebration by smoking cigars and swigging beer and bubbly. The arena was empty, but there were media and arena staff there.

This Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Celebration issue is getting hot right now. I know it is sad and can be called ‘overreacting’ if they would be banned or suspended on the closing ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the official awarding.

Despite the actions they did, I know they were just overwhelmed by the joy brought by their victory. No one’s perfect. It was their mistake, but I expect no larger sanctions to their misbehavior.

Kramer ‘mad’ with coach as gold slips

The sight of Sven Kramer’s girlfriend holding her head in her hands as he skated the best race of his life told the Dutch speedskating world champion that gold was not his and something had gone badly wrong.

“A few laps from the end I knew it was all wrong. I saw my girlfriend in the stands, her hands over her face and I thought ‘shit, this is big shit’,” said Kramer after he was disqualified for a lane infringement in the 10,000m despite clocking the best time by several seconds.

Kramer was cruising to victory when his coach Gerard Kemkers sent him into the wrong lane eight laps from the end.

He was subsequently disqualified and the gold was handed to Korea’s Lee Seung-hoon.

“I was looking at Kemkers showing me the symbol to go inside and I had a split second to make a decision,” a furious Kramer told reporters. “I took a decision that I thought was good.”

The Dutchman, who had won gold in the 5,000m at the Vancouver Olympics, continued to skate finishing more than five seconds faster than Lee.

“It was the best 10,000m I have ever skated. I am mad with the coach and I will have a conversation with him.”

Kramer furiously hurled his sunglasses across the rink and could barely look at his coach when it became clear the outcome of the race was in doubt.

Kemkers is a vastly experienced speed skating coach, who himself won a bronze medal at the 1988 Calgary Olympics over 5,000m.

“I cannot explain it. This has never happened to me before. This is the first time,” Kramer said.

“I am furious,” he said, screaming at Dutch television reporters to be more quiet while he was talking.

“In a split second I had to take a decision and I took it. I cannot explain it. At the end of the day it is the skater who is on the ice. Maybe we have to say we got it wrong.”

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics: Ice Dancing, Russians on the Lead

In the Winter Olympics 2010 Figure Skating of Ice Dancing, the Russians are on the lead.
Russians Maxim Shabalin and Oksana Domnina, the 2009 world champions, were first with 43.76 points. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, 2009 world bronze medalists, were second with 42.74.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White, University of Michigan students coming off their second consecutive U.S. title, placed third with 41.47 points, followed by U.S. teammates and 2006 Olympic silver medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto with 40.83. The Americans placed in the 3rd and 4th. It was nice to see Meryl Davis, though. It’s just that the Russians were good. Watching the replay is recommended.

USA’s Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates, also University of Michigan students, placed 14th with 31.37 points. They, too, were aware they might have skated the final compulsory dance at the Olympics.
